Becoming a Pilates instructor can feel confusing, and you’re not alone if you’re unsure about the difference between taking a course and actually becoming certified. Below, we break it all down for you—what the process looks like, what’s required, and how you can start teaching even before you’re fully certified.

  • No. Taking the course is just the first step toward certification. It gives you the education and training you need to start teaching, but certification requires additional practice hours and an exam.

  • Yes! Many instructors start teaching after completing their coursework, even before taking the certification exam. While you may not earn as much as a certified instructor, you can still get hired by studios that accept trainees, start teaching private clients, or apprentice at a studio to gain experience.

  • Taking a course gives you the knowledge and practical skills to teach Pilates. Certification is an official credential that proves you’ve completed the required practice hours and passed an assessment.

  • While you can start teaching after taking the course, certification:

    Makes you more employable at top-tier studios

     Increases your earning potential.

    Shows clients and employers that you’ve met industry standards.

  • Supplemental hours are required for certification and include:

    Observation Hours – Watching certified instructors teach.

    Practice Teaching Hours - you are teaching a body in front of you.

    Self-Practice Hours – Practicing Pilates on your own to refine your technique.

  • Yes, all reputable programs require an anatomy and biomechanics course as part of your training. Knowing how the body moves is essential for safe and effective teaching. Our anatomy course is taught virtually where you can learn at your own pace.

  • No. The anatomy course is separate and taught virtually through the Pilates Academy HQ. It is a 15 hour course and the course is $499. You can do it completely at your own pace.

  • Nope! you can do your supplemental hours at any studio, and in many cases even from home (unless you need an apparatus and don’t have one). You can also find another studio thats close to you to do your hours. In many cases we can help you find that studio as well.

  • Mat Certification qualifies you to teach mat Pilates. This is a great option if you live in an area without many reformer Pilates studios. Many Spin/cycle studios are starting to add mat Pilates classes and need qualified instructors! 

    Reformer Certification qualifies you to teach Reformer classes only. It’s great for group classes and boutique studios.

    Comprehensive Certification includes Mat, Reformer, Cadillac, Chair, and Barrels, allowing you to teach privates, special populations, and in full-service studios.

    If you want to teach at most studios or work with private clients, comprehensive certification is the better option.

  • Yes, a Pilates certification is more time-consuming and expensive than those other quick weekend courses (think spin instructor or Solidcore). But the investment is worth it. You gain in-depth knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics, and precise exercise modifications, setting you apart in the fitness industry. If you're serious about elevating your career and making a real impact, a Pilates certification is the gold standard.

  • Pilates Academy International (PAI) offers a comprehensive, client-focused approach that goes beyond just teaching exercises.
